Atlantic halibut - Hippoglossus hippoglossus

چکیده
Distribution Th e Atlantic halibut is distributed throughout the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and in parts of the Arctic Ocean (Fig.1) (1). Th e species is particularly abundant along the Norwegian coast, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and southern Greenland. It may also be encountered in the North Sea and the western part of the Baltic Sea. Along the east coast of North America, the halibut is distributed from Hudson Strait southward to the southern Grand Bank and St. Pierre Bank. Capture Th e Atlantic halibut has been an attractive species for European fi shermen, and high fi shing intensity has resulted in depletion of stocks in several areas (2). Th e capture of Atlantic halibut in Europe has declined from an all time high of 10 000-15 000 tonnes in the period 1950 to 1965, to less than 2 000 tonnes in 2004 (3). In 2004, the main countries fi shing for Atlantic halibut were Norway (1,034 tonnes), Iceland (574 tonnes), Faeroe Islands (497 tonnes), and United Kingdom (251 tonnes). 1 Institute of Marine Research, Bergen, Norway

متن کاملTopography of different photoreceptor cell types in the larval retina of Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus).
The identities of single cone cells in the retina of Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) larvae were studied by in situ hybridisation using RNA probes for the five different halibut opsins. Four different cone opsins (ultraviolet-, blue-, green- and red-sensitive) are expressed in Atlantic halibut at the end of the yolk-sac period, whereas rod opsin is expressed later in development. P...
متن کاملPathogenicity of nodavirus strains from striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex and Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus, studied by waterborne challenge of yolk-sac larvae of both teleost species.
The present study shows that differences in pathogenicity exist among fish nodavirus strains. In challenge trials, a Japanese strain (SJ93Nag) was highly virulent to larvae of the striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex but replication was not detected in larvae of Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus at 6 degrees C. Conversely, a Norwegian nodavirus strain (AH95NorA) that was highly virulent to...

body fluids (Evans, 1993) is reflected in their eggs (Davenport et al., 1981; Riis-Vestergaard, 1982; Watanabe and Kuo, 1986; Mangor-Jensen, 1987; LaFleur and Thomas, 1991). However, these eggs have none of the advantages of the adult osmoregulatory organs associated with homeostasis, and the typical drinking activity seems to start at, or shortly before, hatching (Guggino, 1980; Mangor-Jensen ...
متن کاملHumoral immune parameters of cultured Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.).
Several humoral immune factors were studied in a group of cultured halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.). The serum protein and IgM concentration was comparable to levels seen in other teleost species. A strong antibody activity against TNP-BSA was observed but not against other antigens tested. Lysozyme and anti-protease activity was detected and showed variable heat sensitivity. Unlike the a...
متن کاملThyroid hormone receptor expression during metamorphosis of Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus).
Flatfish such as the Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) undergo a dramatic metamorphosis that transforms the pelagic, symmetric larva into a benthic, cranially asymmetric juvenile. In common with amphibian metamorphosis, flatfish metamorphosis is under endocrine control with thyroid hormones being particularly important. In this report we confirm that tri-iodothyronine (T(3)) levels p...
